Open To Work

a crowdsourcing creative piece

This piece is an algorithmically generated image based on the LinkedIn profile pictures of the people I know from the Pratt Game Arts program, some current seniors, some graduated. I coded the pixel-editing algorithm myself in python ; it takes input in the form of different images, then creates a new image by extracting and remixing the HSV (hue, saturation, and value) properties of each image. It is also able to merge two (or more) such remixed images by alternating odd and even pixels of each in a new image.

The social networking platform LinkedIn is a common topic of discussion amongst us students and alumni of the Pratt Game Arts program, whether we are meeting at school, at networking events, or at leisure events (such as the club, cinema, or each other's houses). The topic of employment, or prospective lack thereof, looms over us - as such, how we present ourselves on this platform (our profile pictures) is of utmost importance to us and the frequent subject of feedback, advice-seeking and advice-giving, in short : it's something we definitely talk - and think about. This piece is meant to represent those discussions, showcase the nature backgrounds we tend to choose, the general placement of our eyes, our many smiling mouths...

And, of course, the Open To Work banner many of us choose (or need) to wear.
